Lasek with Custom Wavefront 14/5/09

I had lasek 2 weeks ago at OE in Bristol. The only gripe I have with OE is that their customer service absolutely stinks.

My prescription was pretty high:

L -5.5 Sphere 1.25
R -6.5 Sphere 1.5

The surgeon said I had an 80% chance of 20:20 vision so I was optimistic, he also said to allow for regression he would overcorrect and hope after a few weeks my presc would be around +0.75 to +1.

Upon my arrival at the clinic the nurse informed me (even after numerous telephone conversations with OE saying they would be performing lasek instead of lasik with intralase) that I would be having lasik with intralase. When I mentioned this the nurse started arguing with me and eventually I had to say to her dont talk to me anymore or I will lose my temper!

Anyway, the procedure. It was completely painless, not really uncomfortable either, over in ten minutes and after 15 minutes I was free to go, no waiting in a dark room. The staff were great and the surgeon was excellent, I couldnt have asked for a better experience. If you are doubting the surgery because of pain then dont, you cannot feel a single thing.

The only uncomfortable part was when my eye was rinsed with ice cold water as that numbed the eye socket, but even a complete wuss could deal with that!!!

My eyes were starting to sting by now so I put on my sunglasses, grabbed my bag of meds and I was off home!

Got home, eyes streaming, light sensitivity but no pain!! Wow I thought I was majorly lucky, I went to sleep, woke and the streaming had gone, although the light sensitivity remained.

I took sleeping tablets and went to sleep for the night (wearing the goggles of course). The next day was my 1 day check, couldnt believe it, no pain still!!! I thought I was really lucky not to have any pain, I was able to walk around Torquay no problem.

About 4pm that night the pain started :( it lasted for around 4 days, it was pretty sore, and I think this was the bandage lenses. I couldnt wait to have them out!

I made it through the weekend, had the bandage lenses out Monday and was told I am way ahead of schedule and my eyes are healing very fast.

I had a 1 week check on Monday 25th May and the consultant said my outer eye has healed already and I am healing quite ahead of schedule and he said this is a good thing.

We did a quick eye test and he cleared me to drive, and also said I had 20:20 vision but didnt tell me my prescription.

I decided I would take an eye test at vision express even though its still early days as I wanted a second opinion. My new prescription:

L +1.5
R +1

I am pretty happy with this as it is close to what the surgeon was aiming for.

So now my vision, probably the bit anyone reading this wants to know about! Well it is still very early days but my vision is pretty good, I can read number plates at more than 20 metres although things do look slightly blurry still, I can read one line below 20:20 on the chart but it isnt crisp or crystal clear, but hopefully this will come in future months.

Either way if things stay like this I would still be happy as I can function fully without problems, close up things are a little weird, and letters at a distance are a little blurry but generally so far I am happy.

Fingers crossed this will last and I have some room for regression too. Overall at this point I am pleased, dont really have any haze or dry eye (a little in the evening and morning), night vision is just, well weird but I can live with that. Halo's on streetlamps look like giant afro's and starbusts on some lights but generally not that bad.

My eye sight is not so great in low light conditions though. I will post back here in a few months as I found these diaries extremely useful when deciding if this was worth it for me.

Fingers crossed I will still be happy!

Its been almost 1.5 years since I had my surgery done. Just thought I would provide an update for anyone that is considering the surgery.

I still have perfect vision in my right eye and I have overall better than driving standard vision and have not needed any correction since.

I am due to have my left eye corrected again in the next few months as after monitoring it has remained consistant. I am not 100% happy with the vision in this eye.

The vision is +.75 and I have a 1.25 astimatism which is the same as before I had the correction. I can see fine but the vision is a little blurry and I cant see as well from my left eye.

I just need to wait for the surgeon to review my case and he will hopefully agree to do the work again to correct this and I will then have absolutely perfect vision.

After having such a high prescription I am happy with the overall result but just need the left eye fixing and I will then be completely happy.
