Going for IOL's then top up laser (high prescription)

My prescription is right eye SPH -17.00 CYL -2.75 AXIS 85
and left eye SPH -18.25 CYL - 4.00 AXIS 90

So I always known that getting any improvement on my vision is going to be difficult. I've had a consultation with Ultralase in London Harley Street when they told me I would need IOL's (which I already thought) and then laser top (which I was hoping I wouldn't need).
Unfortunetly one of the machines there wasn't working :( so I had to go to Southampton a week later, which was a bit of a pain. I was annoyed when I went to Southampton to be told that I could of had all the tests for IOL's done there, as the contact centre had told me I had to go to London for a consultation. So a bit of a wasted trip to London really.

But anyway the staff where lovely. :) In London there wasn't any offer of a hot drink which was a bit dissapointing as we had been travelling for 3 hours. But in Southampton it was really nice, free hot drinks and biscuits whenever we liked. And a lovely nice clean clinic. ;)

So now I'm sitting here waiting for someone from Ultralse to call me back as I've said I want to go ahead and book myself in for IOL's!! :D
If anyone has any details on the surgeon Mark Wevill please let me know what he was like. And I'd love to hear how people are getting on with IOL's.

x x

Hi there,
I had IOL's fitted by Mark Wevill about 6 weeks ago. He is really good in my opinion. Before the op he explained exactly what was going to happen and relaxed me in the theatre. During the op he told me what was going to happen, such as you see coloured lights now, etc.

I have had really good results. I was SPH +8 CYL -2.5 in each eye and I now have 20/20 for distance. I need glasses for reading small text, but I can use a PC and read standard print without.

Hi Chesebrgr

That sounds really good then. So you didn't need any laser top up? Just wondering how long did it take to do each eye? I've been told about 20 to 40 minutes because I may need stitches as they can't fold the artifical lens up as much as they normally do because my prescription is so high. Also did you have a sedative or was it just drops?

I phoned Ultralase in Southampton in the end and booked in to have the IOL's. One op on 29 march and the other on 7 April!! Scary stuff!!

Also, I only work saturdays and have been told I should be okay to still work. Why did you have time off, was it just easier or where your eyes uncomfortable?

Thanks so much for your reply, its great to hear from someone who's had what I'm going for and with the same surgeon!!
Stacey x

Just a quick edit - as I hit the wrong key and put my first treatment date at 19th march when I meant 29th March!! :D

I tried to call Ultralase in Southampton a few times today but the phone just rang. :( I called the call centre in the end and was surprised to be told that the Southampton clinic was closed today. I was very surprised to hear this. I asked the call centre staff if this happens often and she said yes when they have no appointments then they will decide to close for those days. So I was a bit concerned about what would happen to me if 2 days after my surgery I had severe pain in my eye and it needed checking?
Off course I won't want to spend 3 hours getting to London so what will happen.? Unfortunately the lady on the phone didn't know the answer and has told me that she will get someone to call me 2moro morning.

I was only phoning because I wanted some details sent to me on the finance we will be signing up for (as I don't have £6300 just sitting in my bank account!! ;) I wish!!)

Thought it was a bit odd being given a bit of paper asking for all our bank details, and thats all we have.

I also wanted to know (just outta curiousity) what type of lens they will implant - Thought I could seach on the internet for it, see if there are any reviews out there for it.

Oh well, just have to wait for tomorrow then for now . . .

Hi Stacey,

I've given the guys at Southampton a heads up to ensure they call you today. Not all the clinics are open on a Monday but should you need advice or have any concerns regarding your treatment there is an on call nurse who will be on hand to help.

Please let me know if you don't hear from the clinic this morning.

Hi Luisa

Thx for that, yep they did call. :)
Apparently staff where away on training. Think it would be a good idea for Southampton to have an answering machine so that people know the clinic is closed. All I had was ringing all the time.

There gonna post the finance details in the post, and I'm getting an ‘’Artisan’’ lens. Roxy sent me an email with the information. The staff at Southampton have been very helpful so far. I know I can ask any other questions that I have, which really hellps as I'm a real worrier it seems! :D So thx.

Hi Stacey,

I spoke to Lee the clinic manager and he also mentioned they had a training day. I will let them know about setting up some kind of redirect for the phone lines so that should the clinic be closed, there is a notification.

Really glad to hear that your overall experience has been good. It's understandable that you'll be worried but the Southampton team will be more than happy to help.

If you need anything from me then just ask.

Hi Stacey,
No I didn't need laser top-up. My prescription was +8 though, completely different to yours. I do still have very slight astigmatism in my left eye, they have offered laser to correct this but I don't think it's worth it, it is so minor. Both eyes together, I have 20/20 at distance. I can use PCs without glasses but I do need reading glasses for small writing (normal size reading in good lighting is fine).

The op apparently lasted about 15 minutes but it seemed more like about 5. It was rather like having a tooth filling, just lie back and let him get on with it, just keep thinking it'll be over soon. No sedatives, just the anaesthetic drops. You don't feel a thing but it's not a particularly pleasant experience!

I had my op on a tuesday; I definitely needed weds and thurs off because my eyes were sensitive and couldn't stay open too long, and because I work with PCs I didn't want to strain them. In between eyes, driving was not possible (although technically I could do it legally, I definitely wouldn't!!!), so I couldn't go in on friday or the next monday, and then I had my second op. Again tuesday and wednesday were recovery, and there wasn't much point going in just for friday. I'm glad I did have the friday and weekend to recover because my second eye was a bit sore and uncomfortable, it took longer to settle down.

I see your ops are almost 3 weeks apart. If you can change to make them closer together, I would definitely recommend it, unless your prescription requires that long in between. The period in between was quite bad, I wouldn't want 3 weeks of being able to see in one eye but not the other, not knowing whether to wear glasses or nothing or to close one eye or just give up and go to bed!

Thx Chesebrgr, thats really good to know. Luckily I only work Saturdays as I have 2 small kids. :)
And I'm so sorry for being really stupid but I've put the wrong date up on my previous post!! My first op is on Mon 29 March and the second one on Weds 7 April. I musta hit the wrong key!! Yes I would of hated to wait that long!! They did offer me dartes with just over 2 weeks apart before but as I'm going on holiday in May I want to be able to swim with the kids okay, so wanted it done sooner. I was a bit worried that they won't make the lenses in time but they assured me they will be.

I'm hoping to be able to work okay after surgery. I work in an office job in customer services. As my first op is on a monday I should be ok for the following saturday. But my next op will be on a weds so I guess I will have to see how I am. I can walk to work so thats not a problem but obviously I'm hoping it won't be long before I can drive again afterwards.

I got my eye lashes tinted today as I'm not looking forward to not being able to wear any makeup for a month after the op's and my eyelashes are blonde so can't go without mascara. It was wierd having them done as I've never had them done before but it did make me think what its going to be like when I'm laying there when they do the surgery. I had to lay down with my eyes closed for ages and they where watering and I was just thinking how much worse is it gonna be when I'm having the procedure!! Eeekkk!!

Also I'm thinking how am I gonna cope not being able to bed down for nearly a month!! Think your right and I shall just try and stick to my bed for most of my recovery and avoid my kids jumping on me (I hope!)

Did they inject the anaesthetic into your eye at all, or was it all just drops? Not sure if I want a needle in my eye as thats just anouther thing to cause problems. Also did you need stitches at all? I think I might need to. Sorry I have so many questions that keep popping into my head!

Thx so much for your advice tho, really appreciate it all

Ah, eyelashes... the central ones on my left eye had to be trimmed, because he couldn't get the clamp on first time (my fault - I couldn't keep my eye open). They are just about back to normal length now, 6 weeks later. Not a big issue for me, but I guess women take their lashes a bit more seriously. Just bear in mind, they may need to be trimmed! Sounds like you got some good practice for the treatment though, yes you just lay there and let them get on with it. You "want" to blink, I guess just by habit, but you don't "need" to because your eyes are kept lubricated. It's quite weird.

The anasthetic is just drops, no needles. There are about 6 of them over a half hour period, while you watch daytime TV getting blurrier and blurrier, and chat to the people before and after you. It's really not bad at all.

Have you checked your holiday dates with the recovery periods? I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but you have to wait a certain time before taking a flight, it is a longer time for long-haul destinations. And it is a longer time for IOL than with laser treatments. If you're having the laser top-up before you go then you might be cutting it fine for May?

I didn't need stitches so can't comment on that part. It doesn't sound very nice but I guess you won't really know what is going on by then, it is just a few more minutes of laying back and letting him get on with it. Good luck!!

Nooo - I hope they don't trim my lashes!! ;)

Think your eye lashes are always replacing themselves, so after 6 weeks you have all new ones. I wear makeup most days so I had to have something done to make up for the lack of it after my op :)

We're staying in the UK for a holiday, would love to go abroad but definetly can't afford it now I'm getting my eyes done! Yeah I guess you can't go on a plane to soon afterwards because of the eye pressure thing and if you have any problems. I just wanted to be allright to take kids swimming.

I've not been getting to worried about it yet but last night I did start freaking out that I might be to scared once I'm there to actually go ahead with it!! God I hope I'm calm on the day! Only just over a week left now! Just need to buy some sunglasses, and cotton wool buds to clean my eyes with. And get the kids easter presents sorted in case I don't feel up to it afterwards!

Have you got used to seeing without glasses now then? Or does it feel strange? Do you have anouther check up of do you wait a year now?

Not liking the idea of stitches in my eye as that'll probably make me feel like I have grit in my eye. But I might not have much choose if the Surgeon can't fold up the IOL enough.

I'll let you know how I get on, thx for you kind comments

i was +5 and +4.5 when i had iols in jan 08 and i had a laser to reduce astigmatism in may 08-results at first were excellent for distance with specs for reading - over the last 12 months vision has gone backwards a little but dim light haziness has got quite bad in my left eye - the surgeon says he can retreat the prescription but a risk of making the haziness worse so i am disappointed on a daily basis which is not what i expected really-ask me if i would go back and not do it? most days yes.

Your lashes should be fine if you (or rather, your eyes) are well behaved and allow him to ge the clamp on :)

I didn't find I needed sunglasses at all. Your eye is taped shut after the op anyway (for the journey home). I kept my eye shut for most of the day of the op, only taking the shield off to put drops in -- maybe a bit over-cautious but it worked for me. The next day I was a bit sensitive but not too bad.

It is still strange having no glasses! I thought I'd be constantly "pushing them up" but I don't at all. I do still go to put them on after a shower though, and take them off before bed!

My next checkup is the 3 month one, that is about 2 months away now. In total you have them at 1 day after each eye, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year.

Had my first eye done (the right one)
Amazing!! The surgeon was really nice. Quite sore now though! Been taking paracetamol since I left the surgeon centre. I had to have 4 stitches as the lens was not folded up like they normally are as it was to strong a prescription to fold. I thought it was gonna be 2 stitches but not to worry.

The surgeon also did some stuff to my cornea to try to improve my astigmatism so hopefully I won't need the laser top-up. So I think all these extra things have made my eye more sore, expecially the stitches cause I feel like I have grit in my eye. Can't see much at them moment, so sorry for my typing!! Everything in my right eye is very foggy and hazy.

The Surgeon, Mark Wevill, said that there was a small chance that after my surgery I might not reach driving standard with correction glasses. Something to do with the tissue damage or something. I'd not been told this before so am a bit worried and praying that I'm okay!! Check up 2moro in Southampton so I'll see what they say. I wanted a bath 2night too but not sure I should now as it says not to wash my hair for 2-3 days which I can't stand!!

I'll post more once I can see better!! :o

Well its been 6 days since I had the IOL put into my right eye. The eyesight has improved daily but it is still quite blurry. So I am thinking I am going to need the laser top up after all, which is a shame. I know its still healing but I don't think my eyesight is gonna improve much more. The surgeon Mark Wevill had hoped to correct my astigmatism by doing something to my cornea (sorry I can't remember what he said exactly) but I think my astigmatisms are just to strong. :(

I'm supposed to be getting my left eye done on weds (3 days time) but if they go ahead and do that eye as well I am concerned that I won't be able to see to read or watch telly, or do much at all!! Ultralase have said that I will be provided free prescription glasses if I needed them after surgery, but I feel like I want them now for my right eye!! But I will probably need to wait until I've had my left eye done and I don't know how I'm gonna cope looking after my 2 small kids and everything else with the way my eye sight is outta the right eye.

I know Ultralse may decide that I need to wait for my right eye to settle completly before getting the left eye done, but I really just wanna get it over with now!! I'd love to go to the opticians right know and see what it would be like to have lenses put over my right eye like they do when they are correcting your vision normally, when you have an eye sight test. Just to see if glasses will help me to see out of my right eye.

I can move my eye around without any pain now, but it still feels bruised. There has been a goory blood blob just under the coloured part of my eye since I've had the eye done. Some people don't like seeing it cause they don't like the thought of stuff being done to eyes. But my kids love it, they keep asking to see the blood. I've been told by Ultralase that its just where a stitch has pulled a bit and its bled, its has been slowly clearing up, but its still there. yuk! :o

Most of my stitches are under my top eye lid which you can't see. My eye is still a bit puffy, but then its normal for my body to over react to everything!! Ultralase said that my cornea had over reacted on the day after my surgery. The stuff under my top eye lid doesn't look to bad at all, you can just see some viens. You can't see the stitches or anything.

Seems to be taking a long time to heal, but I think my case is unusual because I needed stitches as the lens they inserted couldn't be folded up like normal. Just hope my right eye improves loads by wednesday!! Last day today for me wearing my left contact lens. When I wear my glasses with one lens in I feel travel sick, its horrible, so I'm not looking forward to the next two days as I can't put my contact lens in 2 days before surgery. Oh I hope its all worth it in the end!!

Had my second eye done now!! Woohoo!! The operation felt the same as the last time but my eye has reacted totally different then my right one did!! Soon as I got home and peeled the sticky tape of my lashes (ouch!) and tryed to open my eye I could see so much already!! Unlike my right eye which was really cloudy and took a few days to clear. So really impressed and happy right now (1 day after surgery). I've had my checkup and all fine. They even managed to give me an eye sight test (the surgeon Mark Wevill had said I would need glasses for my right eye the day I got my left one done). So Ultralase in Southampton gave me an eyesight test today and I'm gonna be sent glasses in the next few days in the post. My prescription is now about a -2 in both eyes just because of the astigmatisms that they couldn't fully correct with the IOL's. I'm still really pleased with that as its such a huge difference between being a -18 to a -2. The staff have all been so helpful too (in London and Southampton) and not rushed me through anything. There happy to answer all my questions, even the really silly ones!! ;)

My right eye is the worst and I can see better with my left, but it's always been like that. Even though my prescription is higher in my left eye. My left eye is always the dominent one and I think my brain doesn't use the image in my right eye much at all. I was really worried about getting the left eye done as I felt I couldn't see well enough yet out of my right eye. But I'm so glad I've got it done now as I can see so much better. I certainly wouldn't be able to type this if I was just using my right eye now.

My left eye is settling down more and more as today goes on. It was so sore last night though. Infact it hurt more afterwards then my right one did. No idea why. I only had 2 stitches in my left eye, whereas my right eye needed 4. But last night I was sat in the dark with my dark sunglasses on and my eye was streaming, it was watering so much. Alot better now though.

The only negative thing to happen yesterday was that Ultralase didn't have my lens for my left eye and had left it in Nottingham, which was no use to me as the surgery centre was in London. They didn't even notice until I'd had 2 lots of drops put in my eye. It was sorted out really well though. Ultralase organised a taxi to bring the lens to london and whilst we waited, myself and my husband went out for a meal which Ultralase are going to pay for. So I was releaved in the end as I didn't want to rebook. :o

So now its just a case of wait and see how my eyes settle and they may change the prescription in my glasses there giving me. And then eventually I can have laser which is included in the cost. So I think so far its all been worth it and I'm really looking forward to our next family holiday somewhere hot where I can go swimming in the sea with the kids and have a gr8 time not having the fuss of glasses or contacts!!

And thankyou so much to chesebrgr who has been a gr8 help through all my worries!!

So glad it has all gone so well for you, despite the slight technical hitch with them not having the lens! My turn next so hope I get good results too. By the time I have mine done you should be well recovered. Take it easy (well as much as you can!).

Congrats on your new eyes Stacey, glad it all went well ;)

I've just passed 10 weeks now so I'm off to Thorpe Park this weekend. It will be the first time I can actually see clearly while going round the rollercoasters :o

Hi Stacey, I was the lady who went in after you last week. Just thought I would touch base with you to ask how things are going with you. My right eye has now been done with no problems at all - I can read the smallest of print. Just need to wait for a week today for the next replacement lens and then all should be really exciting

Take care and speak soon

Thx Trudy. And a big thx to you also for the emails and support over the last few weeks!! Hoping yours go well too. Think its gonna be a while for me to recover as stitches don't dissolve until around 6 - 8 weeks!! I thought it would only be 1 or 2!! But Mark Wevill (the surgeon) said they have to stay in place and do there job whilst my eyes heal :o Keep me updated on yours!! :o x

Thx chesebrgr :) You never wore contacts did you? so yeah its gonna be wierd for you going on the rollercoasters! Should be amazing tho! Think of all the stuff you can do now that is so much easier then before. I've found it wierd enough having a bath and drying my hair with no glasses on. Sometimes in the evenings I think Oh I need to take my contact lenses out cause my eyes feel sore, but then I remember!! Haha! Do your eyes feel sore at all now or do they just feel fine all the time? Mine are still sore now and then. Mornings they are full of sleep and gudge, and by the evening they feel a bit gritty sometimes, but its not bad at all really when you think all the stuff I've had done to my eyes!! x

Hi Sharron! great to hear from you, was wondering how you'd got on. How did you find the operation? Glad its gone so well for you so far! hope you don't have any issues like I did with the lens! Are you having fun with the lovely eye shields!!? I can't stand the way they leave sticky glue around your face all the time from the tape!! Took me a while to get the hang of having my eye open and cleaning it with a cotton wool buds and boiled water too. But really good at it now, at first my eye lashes where still quite sticky but I feel braver cleaning them now. Did you need those painkillers afterwards? I certainly did this time! Let me know how your second operation goes x

Thx so much to you all for your comments. Its been great to talk to you all about it. And having 3 different views points. One thats already had it done, one thats about to have it done and another that is going through having it done!

I had my checkup on Thurs (1 day after surgery) and 2 days later whilst I was at work my glasses arrived in the post!! I was really surprised that they came so fast! So I've been out driving around with no problems which is fantastic!! The only thing I'm missing is the opticians fitting them to my face properly but I've done my best with them and there fine. I'm not wearing them all the time as can see close up fine, but in the eveings when the daylights gone I find I need them more. There a nice pink colour but totally different to what I'm used to. And cause I keep taking them off I'm sure I'll lose them soon!! I go back for a checkup this thursday, my sisters watching the kids for me and I'm gonna drive myself there and back, which is brave of me but I should be fine. With my glasses on and can see better then I ever have in the past. Ultralase will provide me with glasses as my eyes settle then I can have laser when I like. So I'm happy. Just getting to the point now where I've had enough of wearing eye sheilds and I want to bend down all the time and i wanna bath properly. And I really really want to RUB MY EYES!!!! Don't know if its my hayfever or what but at somepoints during the day I just wanna give them a really good rub but if I go near them I know it will hurt just to touch them!! Its been 2 weeks today for my right eye so now I don't have to put the shield on that one anymore and can wash it properly but to be honest I'm a bit scared to!! Oh yeah and of course I can put make up on one eye too! But I think I'll wait until I can do both :)

Just 9 days now until I can do most stuff again. Feeling really tired today but I think thats just the kids playing me up over the easter hols. I'm sleeping okay with the shields on although I am lookiong forward to sleeping without them!

Hi Stacey

I think I must have been really lucky. I know that I had a slightly different operation than you but I have had absolutely no pain whatsoever and didn't even after the operation. My eyes get cleaned each morning but they are not all gunged up so it isn't too bad at all but then I haven't had to undergo the stiches like you have :(

The operation went really well and as soon as I got home I could read small print on the bottom of eye drop bottles - impressed or what. I am having lens replacement and the stangest thing I found was the quivering special effects that the lens gave me on the first day. This all went the following day after a good night's sleep though which is good. Mt presription is +3.75 and +5.00 and, becasue od my age it was deemed benifial that I have the replacement lenses where they take out the eye's natural lens. I have one eye for near and one eye for far sight (or at least I will after the second op) The hardest thing I find at the moment is the fact that I have to wear a contact lens in my left eye until the next operation. This still gets gritty if I leave it in too long but without I can only see fuzz in the distance until the next operation. I have tried taking out the lens from my glasses but, because they are verifocal lenses, it makes me feel motion sick so I have given up with them. Roll on the 19th when I have the next one done.

I have my one week after check up at Southampton on Thursday too at 1500 hours and I can't wait to see if the sight has improved any more :) I do wonder if I might need glaasses to drive after the second op - although that is not the idea - we will just have to see!

What time are you with Emily Stacey?

Anyone wanting to have their minds put at rest with this type of surgery - I am a glowing success - just just PM me.

Take care for now and maybe see you on Thursday if your appointment is about the same time as mine.

Sharron

PS - I was legal to drive 24 hours after the first operation as long as I had a contact lens in :o

I didn't have any soreness at all really, just a little irritated/grit feeling for a few days. It's all gone now. I still get the yellow gunk but no more than before the op. ;)

I do have starbursts which is a little irritating as I understood they were only a side-effect of laser treatments. They started a few weeks after my op, they aren't all that big, and only come in the evening after a day's work, but I did think I was safe from them. My wife says she can still see the hole in my eye when the light is right, so hoping the starbursts will disappear when that heals.

The rollercoasters were great, especially the front row of Nemesis Inferno! First time being able to see while going round! In fact even better was not having to worry about my glasses, that was always a real downer, getting to the front of the queue then having to put them in a case and secure it, and afterwards having to get them out and put them on... might not sound like much but I always found it a pain. Much better now

Hi Sharron - appointment at 11.30 2moro in southampton, so unfortunetly I will miss you. Hope yours goes well though.

Sounds like its all been good for you so far then thats gr8! I know what you mean about having to wear one contact lens. I could only wear mine for 8 hours a day so it was a pain having to wear glasses with one lens out, I spent most of my evenings with one hand over my operated eye otherwise I felt travel sick. Got more difficult 2 days before the second operation because I couldn't wear that one contact lens 2 days before surgery. Don't know what your quivering special effects where about thats weird!! :o

I was also told I could drive after my first operation but they didn't recommend it as I think its just because my brain was only using the vision out of my left (unoperated) eye as for some reason I don't use my right eye much.

Hi chesebrgr - That is odd about you having starbursts, I thought that sort of thing was only with laser too. But I have been getting a bit worried because in the evening when the cieling lights are on I sometimes get a curved light at the bottom of my eye, and occasionaly at the top too. I'm not sure if thats what some people call halos?? No idea. Its a bit ennoying though, its like where the light is hiting the lens inside my eye or something. I hope I don't get problems driving at night!! I shall check with them at Ultralase 2moro when I have my check up.

Whats that hole in the eye your wife can see? I was told that they do put a permanent hole in the coloured part of your eye to stop the eye pressure building up, and was told as my eyes are blue that I might see the hole, but I can't. Or do you mean the hole where the incision was made for the lens to go in? :o

Glad you had gr8 fun at Thorpe park, I'm so looking forward to our holiday in 3 weeks time!! Have you been swimming at all since you've had your eyes done?

Sorry to all for my rubbish typing too, I'm sure i've done a lot of typo's, but hope you all get what I'm trying to say!! :P

Will let you know how I get on 2moro. All the best everyone
