Cant decide - Lasik of Lasek

Help please.

I'm booked in for the procedure next week and had decided on Lasik from my research and discussion at my first consultation at Ultralase. Had a check-up with the surgeon today who said I am suitable for either but I got the feeling that he prefers to carry out Lasek - when I asked his opinion (I'd prefer him to decide really) he said either would be fine for me (-3.25) and its my choice - he explained the pros and cons of both but now I'm unsure.

I was certain I wanted Lasik but now I really dont know. Any experiences to help would be appreciated - thanks !!

Thanks Stephen, so long as the flap will heal back to how it was I'm fine with Lasik - dont want it falling off somewhere down the line but it seems that cant happen

I had a consultation with Optical Express today following one with Ultralase a couple of weeks ago, and from what Optical Express said it would seem that Lasik is the 'default' option, and Lasek is only usually done for people whose corneas are too thin for the flap method (especially as Lasek has a longer recovery time and is more uncomfortable). Can anyone back this up as Ultralase also told me I could have either and it was basically 'my choice'?

Hi MaldonKate,

The type of treatment you have also depends upon your lifestyle as well as corneal thickness. For instance, if you take part in martial arts or something similar, Ultralase will offer Lasek over Lasik.

If you're suitable for either, Ultralase will ask what you'd prefer as Lasek is not the same cost as a Lasik treatment.

I myself had Lasek and didn't have too many problems. Recovery time and discomfort is varying from person to person.

Any more questions then please ask!

Hi I'm new to the forum, I'm a kickboxer and have been to a consultation and I'm suitable for treatment I haven't been told about lasek just lasik, so what I want to know is why lasek is preferred over lasik when it comes to martial artsists.

Check out this site for lasik flap healing times :

http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-flap-heal.htm

For kickboxing it is possibly going to be some time for you to be confident that a blow to the eye isnt going to dislodge the flap.
Lasek doesnt create the flap as it a lesser amount is moved and replaced and so whilst more painful healing may be experienced short term you should be able to get to martial arts sooner than with lasik.

Hi, I train muay thai and mma and have also fought on several occasions, when I mentioned this LASEK was offered to me and I had that done.

Since then (1.5 years ago) I have had fought a number of times and spar regularly and I have had no problems. I wouldnt have had lasik as although it may be safe I have taken scratches to the eye in the past and would not risk it.

Fighting with contact lenses in is just a pain but would have been preferable over getting lasik to me.

In fact I remember in my first sparring session post op I took a heavy hit to my eye which was more of a glove stitch rubbing across it. It hurt but I was thankful I had lasek then.
